Send 'em back

Around New Year's, when I was reflecting on what I wanted to change for the coming year, I came across a nicely written post by a friend of mine. One of her new year's resolutions was to take better care of herself. As I read her well written post, it dawned on me I was up early on a Saturday why shouldn't I take better care of myself? I decided I would do something right then, and thought about the drowned rat appearance I had ignored shortly after my morning shower. The drowned rat appearance I ignore most days as we rushed through our week.

I proceeded to the bathroom, where I pulled out my long neglected, velcro curlers. I was going to curl my hair. That's right, I was going to gussy up and get girlie for my husband. I carefully parted my hair and covered my head with the giant curlers. I am somewhat out of practice, if the recently gone swimming look I tend to sport is any indication. After about 30 minutes and at least four mumbled statements including profanities, I walked out to the living room, curlers in place, to make breakfast for the kids. By this time, both kids were out of bed and cuddling with Pete on the couch.

I was ok with the looks of amazement from their little eyes and the chuckles from Pete until I got past little N. "You should give Grandma back her curlers!"

"These are my curlers, honey. Mommy doesn't use them that often."

She of course wanted one of grandma's curlers in her hair and I complied. She then insisted that I give them back to grandma when we were done.

No, mom, I did not steal your curlers.

Organized child

I worked from home today, as usual, and the house was very quiet while the kids were out with Nanny E. I seem to have picked up a weird little habit when I make my lunch in the silence of the house, I'll try to race the microwave and empty the dishwasher before my lunch is heated.

I didn't finish today. I was putting a bowl in the cupboard and turned to see this on our fridge. This of course made me laugh.

My son had lined up all the letters by color order into columns of 4. The poor child. He has inherited my anal-retentiveness. My father was telling me how I would want my pancakes cut as a child. He was more accommodating of my weird sense of order than I knew.

It is funny how your own habits appear in your kids. There have been a few instances where the kids will say or do something and I know exactly where they picked it up. They are little windows into yourself at times, your good and bad traits. Even the silly and weird ones.

This isn't the first refrigerator sculpture I have come across. The last one was a pyrimid with less color order and more emphasis on shape. My daughter will rearrange it into its usual mass of letters all over the door at some point, as she has in the past.

Freezing Fog

The view from my window today

They are calling this freezing fog. A term I hadn't heard before today. It's kind of pretty on the trees.

Little N's hair cut

Little N's hair has really grown fast over the last year. It was finally time to take her for a hair cut. The back was hard to manage in the morning and she was not appreciating having the knots combed out.

It is amazing how fast her hair has grown!

This is her a few days after her second birthday with her grandfather.

The finished hat!

Little N likes her hat. It is a little large for her, but she will grow into it. She tested it out in the the snow for me over the weekend. It kept her warm and happy.

Little N's Mew hat

This project has taken a lot longer than it should have! I started this as a test knit in October. It was coming along nicely and then I tucked my daughter into bed, leaving the knitting in a bag on an end table.

I knew better.

I've lectured the kids 100 times and they knew better.

My husband didn't have to say I told you so.

I tempted the puppies and they have no will power.

I came out to find a pink spider web pulled across my living room, with one dog on either end of it. Even though there are two colors in the hat, the puppies thought that pink was the color for them. It had to be the pink, the one where I was really cutting it close if I had enough to finish the hat. Lucy had pieces of yarn around one paw and a piece sticking out of her mouth with her tail going 100 miles per hour. Max, well, max had what was left of the skein in his mouth with his tail going just as fast.

The puppies were willing to trade my project with a toy and Pete took them outside so I could pick up the living room. Pulling the yarn with the puppies inside... not a good idea.

I picked up the yarn and salvaged what I could from the original knitting. I had to pull out a few rows and luckily there was no damage to my needles. What was left of the ball of pink yarn, was a complete and utter loss.

My son and I stopped by the local yarn shop and found a skein of pink in the same dye lot, which meant I could finish the hat. However, I had to put the hat away. I just didn't want to deal with the knots.

Finally, my sad little hat, the one I promised to test out the pattern for, needed to get off my needles. I was able to get past the point where I had been prior to the puppy-tug-o-war event with what was left and started into the new skein.

Little N is very happy with her hat.
